The CEO of BMW offered his services as a singer for any future gigs… Skylark Jazz Band were thrilled to be invited to perform at the India Art Fair by BMW, one of the festival’s Presenting Partners. The classic jazz standards that Skylark provide, as well as their uniquely luxurious covers of modern pop tunes, made them the perfect choice for this prestigious event. Keep reading to find out how their sets went down, and how it felt jetting off to India for all of two days…
After 14 hours of travel, the Skylark band members landed in Delhi and were picked up in – naturally – the latest BMV SUVs. They described Delhi as a crazy place, filled with weird juxtapositions of beauty and pollution, opulence and poverty. They saw priceless cars, cows pulling carts of fruit, and decrepit buses with people hanging off them, all side-by-side in the same stretch of road. The jazz band had an hour to check into their hotel and head to the Art Fair for their soundcheck. It was the day before the opening of the exhibition but the place seemed like a building site, with everything covered in dust and the toilets still being built. Everything was ready for the band, though. The band had been asked to play relatively quietly, although the organisers had provided so many top-spec cymbals that maybe they had other ideas?! That first night, Skylark Jazz Band played an exclusive set for BMW’s VIP guests. They chatted to the CEO of BMW India, and even got to sit in a state-of-the-art BMW concept car. The following day, they returned to the Art Fair and found that there had been a miraculous transformation overnight, from the dust and chaos of the previous evening to a beautiful venue fit for VIPs. The guests loved Skylark’s unique approach to jazz music, with their cover of My Favourite Things from The Sound of Music going down a treat. They also played requests, including the brilliant Fly Me To The Moon. The CEO of BMW India was there again, and this time was so keen on the band's set that he offered his services as a singer for any future gigs! This trip was certainly not an experience that the Skylark players will forget in a hurry, and we’re sure their exceptional performances will be going round the guests’ heads for a long time to come. Thanks to BMW India for having us, and to Black Hat Talent for making the booking on BMW’s behalf. |
